Orthodontics and Braces in Redfern, Surry Hills and Sydney CBD

Central Dental Centre specialises in orthodontics and helping get the best smile possible. We provide top-quality braces to improve the alignment of teeth and correct a range of conditions. An incorrect bite can be the beginnings of long term dental issues, as well as related problems.

What to expect when you have braces fitted

A specialist dentist will assess your mouth and understand what you want to achieve. This will include x-rays and moulds of your teeth, which will then be used to devise a treatment plan. Generally, teeth will need to be removed to make space for the movement that the braces will facilitate. If they are required, the extractions will be performed by your regular dentist.

The length of the treatment

How long you will be required to wear your braces will depend on the complexity of your case. For the majority of people, they will be worn for approximately 18 – 24 months. This can be prolonged by breakages and other complications.

Fitting and adjusting will occur in stages. Molar bands, brackets and wires will be fitted, which can cause some discomfort, but this will pass as you get accustomed to wearing them. From then, you will be required to return every six – eight weeks to have the braces tightened, and bands and wires changed.

After care

You will be able to eat the majority of the foods you normally would, however there are some that will need to be cut out during the treatment. These include hard, chewy and sticky sweets such as Mars Bars or toffees, or similar, plus crusty bread and hard fruits like apples. In general, more care will need to be taken while eating.

In addition, it is important to maintain excellent mouth hygiene. This can be more difficult with braces in place, but it is more vital as food will become lodged in the braces. Clean after every meal and snack to ensure they are kept clean.
